Learner corpora: a multifarious resource for pedagogical lexicography

Learner corpora: a multifarious resource for pedagogical lexicography

Sylviane Granger

Learner corpus research is a fairly young but highly dynamic field of research which began to emerge as a discipline in its own right in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s. Its objective is twofold: first, contribute to Second Language Acquisition theory by providing a better description of interlanguage and a better understanding of the factors that influence it, and, second, help design pedagogical tools and methods that more accurately target the attested needs of language learners. In the first part of my presentation I will objectively assess how learner corpus research has fared in achieving these two goals, focusing more particularly on the links between learner corpora and teaching.

The second part of my presentation will be devoted to one particularly promising field of application for learner corpus research, i.e. pedagogical lexicography. Two different types of learner corpus integration will be presented. The first type consists in inserting learner corpus informed information into monolingual learners’ dictionaries. The error notes and ‘improve your writing skills’ section in the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners (2007), which are based on the International Corpus of Learner English (Granger et al 2009), are good examples of this type of integration. The second type draws on the flexibility of the electronic medium to bring the dictionary even closer to learners’ needs. The Louvain English for Academic Purposes Dictionary (LEAD) illustrates this more ambitious type of integration. This web-based dictionary-cum-writing aid, currently under development at Louvain, makes full use of native and learner corpus data to help non-native speakers of English write academic texts in a range of disciplines. Its main novelty lies in its customizability: the content is automatically adapted to users’ needs in terms of discipline and mother tongue background.

In my conclusion I will highlight some of the main desiderata for the future and identify the obstacles that need to be overcome if learner corpus research is to have a more significant impact on language teaching.
