Triangulating Corpus Linguistics with other Research Methods to Answer Big Questions in Applied Linguistics

Many important questions in Applied Linguistics are too big to be meaningfully answered using a single research method. In this talk I argue that the solution to this problem is methodological triangulation, or the use of two or more methods to study the same phenomenon. In particular, I attempt to show how corpus linguistic methods can be triangulated with other linguistic research methods in order to address two big questions in Applied Linguistics. I do this through two case studies, the first focused on the relationship between language development/processing and linguistic form, and the second focused on semantic relations among grammatical constituents. I conclude with comments on limitations, strengths, and future applications of methodological triangulation in Applied Linguistics.

As perspectivas que se descortinam para a (IN) Disciplina chamada Linguística Aplicada

Pretendo abordar a questão da relevância cada vez mais evidente da área de pesquisa conhecida como Linguística Aplicada, em especial diante da notória inabilidade da “disciplina-mãe” em lidar com as mudanças que o mundo atual vem sofrendo. Destacarei alguns temas pontuais onde a Linguística Aplicada tem demonstrado sua vocação para enfrentar os mais variados problemas de atualidade que envolvem a lingua(gem).
